Although the idea appalls Mama at first, she trusts and supports her son with his decision. The night before making the investment Walter tells his son about the business transaction he about to make while tucking him into bed. He tells the little boy that their lives will change soon and paints an elaborate and vivid picture of the future. He tells his son that when he’s seventeen years old he’ll come home and park the Chrysler in the driveway. The gardener will greet him and when he’s inside the house he’ll kiss his wife and come up to his sons room to see him browsing through brochures of the best colleges in America. Although Walter is somewhat materialistic in what he wants at the core he just wants a happy family and a son who should have all the chances he never had.

A raisin in the sun is a play about an African American family that is going to receive an inheritance because of a death in the family. However, this twist did not come, which is probably what makes the story work so well. It is a simple and sad story about a life lived without consequence. Having Lena resolve the situation in some way, would not be true to the story, since any action would mean Lena’s life did have some meaning. McLoyd’s work brings to mind the manner in which the 1950s conservative slant echoed the discrimination of the past and present. The work demonstrates that during the 1950s academic work began to be even more direct with its assassination of the individual as the source of limited progress.
What Is Beneathas Dream In A Raisin In The Sun
A Raisin in the Sun is essentially about dreams, as the main characters struggle to deal with the oppressive circumstances that rule their lives. The title of the play references a conjecture that Langston Hughes famously posed in a poem he wrote about dreams that were forgotten or put off. The Youngers struggle to attain these dreams throughout the play, and much of their happiness and depression is directly related to their attainment of, or failure to attain, these dreams. By the end of the play, they learn that the dream of a house is the most important dream because it unites the family. During these two supposedly relieving plans, the female member, Beneatha, Walter’s sister has her own plan of pulling the family out of this mess through the money she wants to use in her medical education. She is the representation of ‘new woman’ as against the traditional opinion of a female character.
- The Youngs appear to be a representation, and an inspirational symbol for African American families in 1950s America as Walter chooses to stand up against social normalities and oppression.
- When they begin to put the family and the family’s wishes before their own, they merge their individual dreams with the family’s overarching dream.
- Walter’s wrong interpretation of the American dream is challenged as he carries illegal transactions before his son.
- Travis chases a rat, while Beneatha and Mama attempt to eradicate cockroaches, both activities which would not occur in wealthier neighborhoods.
- It seems that Walter eventually comes to a more mature understanding of the important things in life, or as Mama says to Ruth, “He finally come into his manhood today, didn’t he?
This means that the “white community” that they are moving to doesn’t want them there and that they will do almost anything to not have them move into their neighborhood. This is when mama thinks people should love each other the most too, because they have to go through a hard time like this. In her autobiography, she says that her mother would stay up at night and guard her house from the racist people. In her autobiography she says, “And I also remember my desperate and courageous mother, patrolling our house all night with a loaded German Luger”. The theme of both her life and writing is to know when the right time to love is.

Although being ambitious and following dreams is good, the way they are followed is important, because focusing too much in a dream could change who you are. It needs to be done in moderation and consideration of others is important when following your dreams, so that your dreams don’t turn into delusions. As Walter clears his throat and asks Ruth for money while avoiding eye contact with everyone but Ruth, he expresses similar behavior to that of a child. He felt shame and embarrassment for the act that he put on earlier which resulted in carfare troubles.
